Proper Use of Seclusion and Restraint

As you may know, there have been a number media reports in the past year about the use of seclusion & restraint in special education programs.  To insure that every school building staff in Wisconsin is well trained in the PROPER use of seclusion & restraint techniques, AWSA collaborated with other major educational organizations, including WCASS, WEAC, WASDA and the SAA, in developing a PowerPoint presentation and a set of notes  in the proper use of seclusion and restraint in special education programs.

You may be interested in working with your director of special education plan on having an annual training opportunity to present this PowerPoint to the staff that comes in contact with students with disabilities. You may also consider conducting this training with your entire building staff.

We hope that this information is helpful to you. In addition, we would like to thank the Wisconsin Council of Administrators of Special Services for leading this project.
